Case Study
with over 10,000 square kilometers of hydraulically linked coal mines, a case study by Naicker revealed that the mining district of Johannesburg has infected the water table due to the dumping of pyrite from spent coal and gold mines. Intrusion into the water table has been so proliferate that soil has been found to have a toxic acidity due to the evaporation of metal dense water. The effects from this specific contamination could be still seen in water 10km downstream.
